Symbolic Meaning of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Journey to Strengthen Interfaith Fraternity by Dede Setiawan & Adila Kamilia

This study discusses the apostolic journey of Pope Francis to Indonesia in September 2024. Apostolic journeys are official visits of the Catholic Pope to various countries in the world. It is also known as an apostolic journey. An apostolic journey has both religious and diplomatic significance. Its purpose is to strengthen the relationship and faith of Catholics around the world. Apostolic journeys are usually undertaken by invitation from heads of state and local bishops. This research uses qualitative methods with literature study data collection techniques. The results showed that the apostolic journey undertaken by Pope Francis showed symbolic meaning. Symbolic meaning emphasizes that humans interact with the surrounding world through symbolic meanings given to objects, words, and actions. The symbolic object that the Pope visited was the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. The symbolic word expressed by the Pope was when he performed mass with Catholics at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. And the symbolic action taken by the Pope was when he attended a meeting with interfaith leaders.
